Microneedling also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a safe and natural procedure that uses micro medical needles that puncture the skin. This creates a controlled injury (acute inflammatory reaction), with the intention to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, resulting in the production of new collagen and elastin fibres as well as improved blood supply. This treatment provides optimal results for various skin concerns, especially when combined with additional serums injected into the skin.

What is Nova and how does it work?

The Dermapen™ is safe for all skin types and uses sterile, individually sealed, disposable needle cartridges for optimal patient safety and comfort. Every Dermapen™ cartridge is made up of 12 small needles which uses proprietary technology to penetrate vertically into the skin. Rapid, vertical and multiple insertions allow for easy penetration of tissue without epidermal damage.

This procedure intentionally creates very superficial “micro-injuries” to the outermost layer of the skin to induce the healing process that includes new collagen production. Microneedling is safe, minimally invasive and an effective aesthetic treatment for several different dermatological conditions. This procedure has been shown to reduce the visibility of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, diminish hyper-pigmentation and improves skin tone and texture, resulting in smoother, firmer, younger looking skin.

What are the treatment indications?

The following skin conditions can be treated with the Nova:

Which areas can be treated?

All areas of the body can be treated, although Nova Microneedling is most commonly used for facial treatments. The technology is so advanced that it is safe and suitable to use in delicate and hard to reach areas such as around the eyes, lips and on the nose.

What will I feel and experience during and after each treatment?

Whether Nova is painful will depend on the sensitivity of the client’s skin and the penetration depth selected.
A numbing cream can be applied to minimize or eliminate any discomfort.
Spot bleeding and some bruising can be expected during treatment.
Most clients will experience an inflammatory reaction of mild redness and possibly some swelling immediately after the treatment – the same way, you would feel with a mild sunburn. This reaction fades and subsides significantly within hours but can last for up to 2 – 3 days.

The healing process takes slower, the older we get, but below is an indication of what to expect, for the immediate healing process:

0 – 24 hours : Redness, tiny red/purple spots caused by bleeding (petechiae), minor swelling
1 – 2 days : Mild redness, petechiae, reduced swelling, minor itching, dry / tight sensation
2 – 3 days : Less redness, fading of petechiae, dissipated swelling, reduced itching, minor flaking
3 – 4 days : Potential slight dryness
4 – 7 days : Full recovery with normalized function

Note: It’s important to understand that although most clients will begin to see the results after the first treatment, the full effects of the Dermapen™ Microneedling do not appear until several months later due to the time it takes for our bodies to produce collagen and elastin.

How many treatments are required?

A Nova Microneedling treatment is not a once-off fix. Several treatments over an extended period may be needed to achieve results safely.

For anti-aging and collagen induction we recommend starting with 4 – 6 treatments, but with a minimum separation time of 4 to 6 weeks between treatments.

For pigmentation and acne scarring reduction an average of 4 – 6 treatments are recommended, with a minimum interval period of 4 to 6 weeks between treatments.

The number of treatments required will however depend on how each client responds to the treatments and the extent of the damage.

How long is a treatment and what are the treatment intervals?

The Nova Microneedling treatment itself takes approximately 45 minutes, but due to the time required for the cleaning, preparation and numbing of the skin, the entire treatment takes up to 90 minutes.

Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks until you achieve the desired results. Preferably, the 6-week interval must not be exceeded as the overall treatment plan, will be less effective for optimal results.

Who can do this treatment and is it safe?

Nova Microneedling does not involve injections and therefore allergic reactions and side effects are unlikely to occur. The tiny pricking channels close within one hour, and because the procedure is performed under clinical conditions, the likelihood of infection occurring is extremely low. This treatment is minimally invasive, involves minimal downtime and rapid healing which requires simple after care by the client.

Treatments are safe and effective for all skin types. To minimize the potential risk of post inflammatory hyper pigmentation on Skin Types 4 – 6, it’s compulsory at Canvas Aesthetics to use our Corrective Brighter Concentrate/Brighter Serum and Ovelle Supplement 14 days prior to treatment. This is precautionary and necessary to calm down the additional production of pigmentation, resulting in Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

An upfront assessment will be done to determine whether you can proceed with treatments. We will also discuss expectations, possible contraindications and decide the way forward. If are pregnant or have any bleeding disorders, you may not proceed with the Nova Microneedling.

What is the pre-treatment protocol?

4 – 6 weeks prior to treatment:

For optimal anti-aging treatment, we recommend using Lamelle’s Corrective RA (Vit A) in advance.
For optimal pigmentation treatment, we recommend using Lamelle’s Corrective Brighter Concentrate/Brighter Serum.

2 weeks prior to treatment:

No Microdermabrasion, Laser, IPL, Intensive Chemical Peels, Dermal injectables and fillers.

1 week prior to treatment:

No sun burn / tan or self-tanning lotion on treatment area.

3 days prior to treatment:

Stop use of all active topical skincare products (such as Acids – AHA and BHA, Vit A)
Lamelle clients will stop Corrective RA, Ultra Renewal, Clarity PM Plus, Luminesce Evening Glow.

Do not colour hair on the same day as procedure.

What is the post-treatment protocol?

Don’t apply SPF creams for 2-4 hours after treatment, thereafter, avoid direct sun exposure – apply a chemical free sunscreen every day for 5 days. (Use SPF at ALL times)
Do not apply make-up for 24 hours after treatment.
NO sun exposure while skin is healing.
Avoid hot baths, showers, sauna, intense exercising, sweating or any other heat sources e.g., fires and hot stoves – for 2 days.
Avoid swimming in a chlorinated pool – for 2 days.
Wash face with a soap-free cleanser (AM & PM) only after 24 hours.
Apply Lamelle Restorative Balm -(AM & PM) for 5 days (*essential for healing post treatment).
Avoid applying any active topical skincare products (such as Acids and Vit A) up to 7 days after treatment.
Lamelle clients should avoid: Corrective RA, Ultra Renewal, Clarity PM Plus, Luminesce Evening Glow up to 7 days after treatment.
If client is experiencing a tingling sensation (when using products after 7 days) this means that the skin has not healed yet and so therefore above products must not be applied until complete healing has taken place.

Are there any other additional home care procedures?

In addition to adhering to strict post treatment protocol and care, the following additional home care routines are advisable for effective and long-lasting results:

Keeping your skin hydrated and nourished with a quality skin care program and daily application of a full spectrum sunscreen.
Taking appropriate supplements and nutrients
Maintaining a general healthy lifestyle which includes:

– A healthy and balanced diet
– Daily hydration (minimum of 6 – 8 glasses of water)
– Avoid smoking

About the Results.

When will I see results?
The initial healing period for the skin takes approximately 5 – 7 days after which it will look and feel noticeably smoother and tighter. It’s important to understand that although most clients will begin to see the results after the first treatment, the full effects of the Nova Microneedling do not appear until several months later due to the time it takes for our bodies to produce collagen and elastin. With each additional treatment, the client should see incremental improvement in the overall appearance of the skin.

How long will the results last?
The treatment can last up to 12 months dependant on your lifestyle, for example if you are a smoker or like to be in the sun, this can affect the results, this is also in conjunction with the use of a proper skincare regime at home as well as regular Nova Microneedling treatments, which are essential for optimal and long-lasting results.
